How to write a good reply on X (Twitter), with examples

How to reply on X (Twitter), how X ranks the replies under a post, and how to write replies people answer, with five kinds of good replies and real examples.

Short answer: To reply on X, open the post, press the reply icon (or the R key on a computer), write up to 280 characters and press Reply. A good reply belongs to that post and no other: it adds a detail, a story of your own, a number, or a question the author wants to answer. Under a post, X lists first the replies from people you follow that the author answered, then replies from verified accounts, then everyone else. A reply the author answers moves up, and one people mute or report sinks.

How to reply on X

  1. Find the post you want to answer.
  2. Press the reply icon under it, or press R on a computer.
  3. Write your reply and press Reply. On a computer, Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) sends it too.

A few things to know:

  • 280 characters, counted the way X counts them: every link is 23, every emoji 2. Our character counter shows it as you type.
  • The @names at the start don’t count. X no longer adds them to the reply text at all.
  • With X Premium you can write longer replies. X’s Premium page says up to 25,000 characters.
  • The author decides who can reply: everyone, accounts they follow, accounts they mention, or only verified accounts. If you can’t reply to a post, that’s usually why.

How X ranks the replies under a post

Replies aren’t shown in the order they came in. X describes its order in its notes on conversation ranking:

  1. Replies from accounts you follow that the post’s author has replied to
  2. Replies from verified accounts
  3. Everyone else

Inside each group, a model sorts replies by how likely you are to like them, answer them, repost them, or mute and report them. Readers can switch the sort to Latest or to Likes.

When ranking a reply higher, we consider factors such as if the original post author has replied, if a reply is from someone you follow

Two of those factors are in your hands. Write a reply the author wants to answer, and write one people won’t mute.

What makes a reply good

  • It could only go under this post. It mentions something the post has: a number, a word the author used, what’s in the picture.
  • It adds something. A detail, a story, a source, a reason. Agreeing is fine when you say why.
  • It’s short. Most good replies fit in one or two sentences.
  • It leaves a door open. A real question, or a point the author can build on.

Five kinds of good replies, with examples

KindThe postA good reply
Add a detail“Saturn tonight through a 6 inch scope. Phone held to the eyepiece.”“You can see the gap in the rings from a phone at the eyepiece. How many tries did it take?”
Share your own story“Shipped our onboarding with 3 screens instead of 7.”“We cut ours from 5 to 2 last spring and support tickets about sign up stopped. Which screen did you drop last?”
Ask what you want to know“Switched our team to 4 day weeks in March.”“What happened to response times on the fifth day? That’s what our CEO asks first.”
Add a number or a source“Nobody reads the replies anyway.”“Meta says replies get almost half of all views on Threads. Somebody’s reading them.”
Disagree, with a reason“Cold email is dead.”“Ours still books 3 calls a week, but only since we cut it to 4 lines with one question.”

Every one of these mentions the post. None could be pasted under another.

Replies that hold you back

  • Praise that fits anywhere: “Great insights, thanks for sharing!”
  • The same reply under many posts. X’s rules call duplicated replies spam.
  • Five replies to one person in a row. To them it’s a pile of notifications.
  • Bait: “Follow me for more” under someone else’s post.
  • AI slop: “This is a game changer” and its cousins. Readers spot it on sight, and so does X: replies like these end up behind Show probable spam.

Before you press Reply

  • Does it mention something only this post has?
  • Would you say it to the author’s face?
  • Is it your third reply to this person today?
  • Any AI words or an em dash in it? Paste it into our free AI Slop Checker.

Twick drafts replies in your voice right under the post, each about the post itself, with 100% no AI slop. You pick one and post it yourself. See it on the Twitter reply generator.
