Growing on X

How to get followers on X (Twitter) from zero: your first 100

How to get your first 100 followers on X (Twitter) from zero: who to reply to and why, what to post, how to set up your profile, and a first month that works.

Short answer: With no followers, your posts reach almost nobody, so your first 100 followers come from replies. Pick a topic and set up a profile that says what you post about. Then reply every day to three kinds of accounts: big ones for reach, people in your own field for the people you want to work with, and small ones for the back and forth that turns into mutual follows. Post one short insight of your own most days. X’s code helps small accounts: it lifts a new author’s original posts, and since July 2026 it shows more of your posts to people you both follow.

Why replies come first

A post from an account with no followers has almost no one to show up for. A reply is different: it sits under someone else’s post, where everyone who opens that post can read it. On a big account, that’s thousands of people who already care about the topic.

X’s former head of product joked about it in 2022, with a growth plan whose first rung was replies, and quoted it again in 2025 with “Still true today”:

Twitter Growth Strategy / 0-500 Followers: Reply Guy

X’s ranking code agrees in a quieter way. It shows your replies in For You only to people who already follow you. Everyone else meets you in the thread, which is why the reply itself has to be good.

Before your first reply: the profile

A good reply sends a few people to your profile, and they decide in seconds. Have these ready first:

  • A name and photo people can remember. Your face, or one clear logo.
  • A bio that says what you post about. X’s own advice: “Share what you do, your value, and why to follow.”
  • A header. Our free header size tool cuts any picture to X’s 1500 x 500.
  • A pinned post. Your best answer to “why follow?”, written once and left at the top.

Who to reply to

Don’t skip the small accounts. Since July 2026, X’s code weighs the chance that you’ll reply to an original post from someone you both follow at 20, against 5 for anyone else. The people you trade replies with see more of your posts, and you see more of theirs.

What to write in those replies

Every reply should fit only the post it’s under. Add a detail the author didn’t mention, a short story of your own, a number, or a question you want answered. Skip “Great post!” and its cousins: they say nothing, and X sinks replies like them behind Show probable spam. Our guide to writing a good reply has examples.

What to post

Followers come for what you’ll post next. X’s code also gives a small account’s original posts a lift: one post at a time, under two hours old, while it has fewer than 200 views. So post too, even when few people see it yet.

Post one unexpected insight you picked from your experience in that area. Keep it under 5 sentences.

A first month that works

WeekWhat to do
Week 1Finish your profile. Follow 30 to 50 accounts in your topic. Reply to a few posts a day, and post once a day.
Week 2Reply most days, spread over the day. Answer everyone who replies to you.
Week 3Notice who replies back. Reply to their posts first.
Week 4Look at which of your replies brought followers, and write more like them.

There is no fixed number of days to 100 followers. A busy topic grows faster than a quiet one, and a week of good replies can do more than a month of bad ones.

What slows your first 100 down

  • Follow for follow. X’s rules call mass following and unfollowing “follow churn”, and cap follows at 400 a day.
  • Bait. Asking people to like, reply or follow is what X calls engagement spam. More in engagement farming on X.
  • The same reply everywhere. X’s rules count duplicated replies as spam.
  • Too fast. X’s limits page lists 200 replies a day for accounts without a blue check, counted in half-hour windows.

Questions

How do I get my first 100 followers on X?

Set up a profile that says what you post about, reply every day to posts in your topic with something only you could add, answer the people who reply to you, and post one short insight of your own most days.

How long does it take to get 100 followers on X?

There’s no fixed time. It depends on your topic, how many good replies you write, and who reads them. Nobody can promise a number.

Should I follow back everyone who follows me?

Follow the people whose posts you want to read. Following and unfollowing in bulk to gain followers is what X’s rules call follow churn.

Do I need X Premium to get followers?

No. Premium gives your replies a slight preference under a post, which helps, but replies from accounts without it get read too.

Who should a new account reply to?

A mix: big accounts in your topic for reach, people in your field for the people you want to work with, and small accounts for conversations that turn into mutual follows.
