What it shows
X counts every link as 23 and every emoji as 2. Threads and Bluesky count what a reader sees. Each tab shows that site’s number.
Links, @names and hashtags turn blue on all three, and X adds $cashtags. A link shows the way each site shortens it.
Line breaks stay where you put them, and long words wrap at the edge of the post, the way the timeline shows them.
Past the limit, the extra text turns red. On X, a long post shows up to Show more, the way the timeline cuts it.
Long posts
| X (Twitter) | Threads | Bluesky | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit | 280, or 25,000 with Premium | 500 | 300 |
| A long post in the feed | About the first 280 characters, then Show more | Shown in full | Shown in full |
| When it folds | Past about 280 characters | Longer text goes in an attachment | 25 or more line breaks |
X doesn’t publish where it cuts a long post. We looked at long posts on X in October 2026: each stopped at the end of a word, close to 280 characters, line breaks included. Bluesky’s cut comes from its app’s code. If a site shows your post differently, go with the site.

Twick drafts replies in your voice right under the post, sized for the site you’re on. You pick one and post it yourself.
FAQ
A way to see how a post or a reply will look on X (Twitter) before you post it: where the lines break, which words turn blue, and where a long post gets cut. This one shows Threads and Bluesky too.
In the timeline, X shows the start of a long post, up to about 280 characters and at the end of a word, then a Show more link. Posts that long need X Premium. Without it, 280 characters is the limit.
No. A Threads post fits 500 characters and shows in full. Anything longer goes in a text attachment of up to 10,000 characters.
Not for length: a post fits 300 characters. Bluesky folds a post only when it has 25 or more line breaks, and then shows Show more.
Each site turns links, @names and hashtags blue, and X does the same for $cashtags. The preview also shows each link the way that site shortens it.
