“Rate limit exceeded” on X (Twitter): what it means and how long it lasts

Why X (Twitter) says Rate limit exceeded, the daily limits on posts, replies, DMs and follows in 2026, how long the pause lasts, and what to do about it.

Short answer: “Rate limit exceeded” means your account, or an app using it, did one kind of action more times than X allows in a set window. X’s limits page lists 50 original posts and 200 replies a day for accounts without a blue check, split into half-hour windows, plus 500 DMs and 400 follows a day. The block lifts on its own when the window ends, and X’s advice is to try again in a few hours. Your account isn’t locked or suspended.

What the message means

X puts a ceiling on how often any account can do each thing: post, reply, send a DM, follow. When you hit one, X stops that action for a while and tells you which limit you hit. X explains why the limits exist:

X enforces rate limits on account actions to maintain reliability and reduce errors.

For apps built on X’s API, the same message comes with the error code 429, “Too Many Requests”, and X’s developer docs say the windows are usually 15 minutes or 24 hours.

A few things on that page are easy to miss:

  • The post and reply limits are split into half-hour windows. You can hit one long before you reach the daily number, if you do a lot in a short time.
  • Every device and every app counts. Posts from your phone, your computer and any app you’ve connected all add up.
  • X can lower the limits during busy periods, and posts updates about it on its status page.
  • No number for accounts with a blue check. The page lists only the limits for accounts without one, and it still carries an older line about 2,400 updates a day. The 50 and 200 appeared in May 2026, without an announcement.

How long it lasts

If you hit your account update/post limit, please try again in a few hours after the limit period has elapsed.

For follows, X says to try again “in an hour or so”, and that you can follow more accounts after a day.

What to do when you hit it

  1. Stop that action. Retrying right away doesn’t help, and on the API it can stretch the wait.
  2. Wait for the window. A few hours for posts and replies, an hour or a day for follows.
  3. Check X’s status page if the error shows up for things you’ve barely done. During outages and busy periods, limits drop for everyone.
  4. Look at your connected apps. Settings and privacy, then Security and account access, then Apps and sessions. An app that posts or follows for you counts against your limits.
  5. Spread your day out. The half-hour windows reward a steady pace over a burst.

Don’t move to a second account to keep replying. X’s authenticity policy names using extra accounts on the same posts, or to misuse replies and mentions, as spam. That turns a pause of a few hours into a bigger problem, the kind we cover in X account locked, limited or suspended.

Reading limits: the 2023 version

On July 1, 2023, many people saw “Rate limit exceeded” just by scrolling. Elon Musk had capped how many posts an account could read in a day, to fight data scraping:

To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits

The caps started at 6,000 posts a day for verified accounts and 600 for others, and went up to 10,000 and 1,000 the same day. X’s current limits page doesn’t list any reading limit.

A rate limit or something worse?

What you seeWhat it is
“Rate limit exceeded”, or a message naming a limitA pause on one action. It ends on its own.
A request to confirm your phone or emailA lock. You get back in by confirming.
Fewer views, or replies that disappear from threadsA limit or a label on your reach. See X shadowban: how to check with Under the Hood.
A notice that your account is suspendedA suspension. Only an appeal brings it back.

If you reply a lot, Twick’s Safe mode reminds you when you pass 30 replies in an hour, 100 in a day, 5 to the same person in a day, or two replies only seconds apart. It’s a reminder you can ignore, and no tool can promise X will never limit an account.

Questions

How long does “Rate limit exceeded” last on X?

X says to try again in a few hours for posts and replies, and in an hour or a day for follows. On X’s API, the windows are usually 15 minutes or 24 hours.

How many replies can I send a day on X?

X’s limits page lists 200 replies a day for accounts without a blue check, split into half-hour windows. It doesn’t give a number for accounts with one.

Can a rate limit get my account suspended?

A rate limit on its own is a pause, and it ends when the window does. What led to it, such as many replies in a short time, is what X’s spam rules look at.

Why do I get rate limited when I’ve barely posted?

All your devices and connected apps count together, the limits work in half-hour windows, and X lowers them during busy periods. Check X’s status page and your connected apps.
